During my time at Pingree, I've spent as much time as possible trying to get involved with the community. Whether it be conferences, on-campus jobs (Although I didn't get paid), or leading clubs and social justice groups, I tried to get to know people through the various opportunities that Pingree had to offer. This not only gave me valuable experience in various disciplines, but also let me create a lot of memories that I wouldn't have even come close to making otherwise.
One of my favorite spots on Pingree's campus is the Makerspace. It has all kinds of 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and other tools that I got the opportunity to learn how to use. Then, after a year in the Makerspace, I became a peer tutor there. At the Makerspace, I got the chance to teach people how to use the tools. It allowed me to explain relatively complex software and tools along with letting me discover my passion for 3D designing. My first few designs are below, birthday and christmas presents for my sister.
After two years of giving tours as a regular tour guide, I then got promoted to a head tour guide, where I managed the other tour guides through events like open houses. However, I still gave tours as a head tour guide and I would really like to do the same thing at UVA.
Throughout my four years, I led several clubs, including Creative Writing Club, Chess Club, Rubik's Cub Club and AI Club, usually for a year or two at a time. This was a good experience organizing events for other students and create something similar to lesson plans for the students.
Through Pingree, I volunteered and organized volunteers for several groups including Rosie's Place, the Accord Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity. I really enjoyed volunteering for these places and even though ti wasn't a requirement for graduating, I'm glad I was able to do it.
I was a member of Pingree's Model UN team since my sophomore year, where I participated in conferences in Boston and Washington D.C. I was able to build delegating and debate skills which I'm looking forward to use in the future, such as the Model UN college circuit,
Over the summer, I was an advisor to incoming freshmen, letting them ask me questions about Pingree and helping organize summer orientations. It was a good experience for me to help younger students who were in similar, very nervous positions as to me my freshman year.
The ASA is an affinity group at Pingree, and every year the members go to AAFC, a regional conference of Asian American Students. At my first AAFC, I led a workshop on Asians in creative writing, discussing famous Asian authors and the stigma around Asians and English.
